To Bio or not to Bio? Organic Food Consumption in Switzerland

At the end of April, the study "To Bio or not to Bio? Organic Food Consumption in Switzerland" by researchers from various Swiss universities was published in the International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research. It examines organic food consumption in Switzerland using data from the menuCH national nutrition survey. Around 27.8% of the population consumes organic products, but these account for only 3.6% of their total food intake. Organic products of plant origin are chosen more often than animal-based products, with the exception of eggs and dairy products. Organic consumption is more common among women, higher-educated, and health-conscious individuals, and less common among younger people, those in French-speaking regions, non-Swiss residents, large households, and people with obesity.

 6 May 2025 – Organic in Figures

On 6 May 2025, Bio Suisse presented Organic in Figures 2024.

Number of lincensees remains stable
By the end of 2024, 1,308 licensees were registered with Bio Suisse—slightly fewer than the previous year. The canton with the most licensees for Bud label (Knospe) products is Bern (204), followed by Zurich (144). Aargau ranks third with 114 licensees.

The number of new license applications declined in 2024. By contrast, compared with previous years, the number of submitted product changes for existing products increased. This is likely because there are already many well-established Bud label products that are popular with consumers.

Organic consumption at a record level

In no other European country is the organic shopping basket as large as in Switzerland. With spending of CHF 458 per person per year, Switzerland once again ranked first in 2024—ahead of Denmark, Austria, Luxembourg, and Sweden. Thanks to positive sentiment among organic consumers, the organic market is holding up despite a challenging overall market environment: turnover reached CHF 4.148 billion. The main drivers are once again the two retailers Coop (+1.9%) and Migros (+0.9%), which together account for around 75% of the Swiss organic market. The organic share in retail stands at 12.3%.
